A classic one-day route

Ohori Park in the morning, Fukuoka Tower at midday, Canal City and Kushida Shrine in the afternoon, the yatai after dark. Head west first, then work back east — it fits in a day.

Walk the 2 km path around the lake; the Fukuoka Castle ruins at Maizuru Park adjoin it.

Midday

Fukuoka Tower and Momochihama

Continue west to the seaside tower — it opens at 9:30. Lunch options cluster around the waterfront park.

Afternoon

Canal City Hakata and Kushida Shrine

Ride back east, about 20 minutes by subway, for the canal-side shops. Kushida Shrine is a 2-minute walk; its ema counter closes at 17:00.

Evening

The Nakasu and Tenjin yatai

By ordinance no stall can set up before 5 p.m., so the yatai are strictly an evening affair. Arrive as the lights come on.

Day two

Dazaifu Tenmangu

The shrine of Sugawara no Michizane, patron of scholarship. About 30 minutes from Tenjin by Nishitetsu — 45 from Hakata, so leave from Tenjin.

Getting there

From the airport

The domestic terminal connects to the city subway's Airport Line by escalator — no transfer to Hakata or Tenjin. From the international terminal, a free shuttle bus runs to the domestic side first.

Around the city

One subway line links the airport, Hakata, Tenjin and Ohori Park. Everything on this page is subway-plus-walk, except the bus out to Momochihama.

To Dazaifu

About 30 minutes from Tenjin on the Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta and Dazaifu lines; about 45 minutes from Hakata Station with a subway connection.
