A one-day route

Asakusa, Ueno, then Otemachi–Marunouchi: a near-straight north–south line with short hops. Add Shibuya or Meiji Jingu and it becomes a different day.

Morning

Senso-ji

The Main Hall opens at 6:00 (6:30 October–March). Come before the tour groups; allow 1–1.5 hours with the Nakamise approach.

Midday

Ueno Park

The Ginza Line runs direct from Asakusa. An hour for a walk-through; 2–3 hours if a museum is on the list.

Afternoon

Imperial Palace East Gardens

JR from Ueno to Tokyo Station, then walk to the Ote-mon gate. Closed Mondays and Fridays — check the day before you go.

Getting there

From Narita Airport

Keisei Skyliner to Ueno in as little as 36 minutes. JR Narita Express to Tokyo Station in about 53 minutes, Shibuya about 75, Shinjuku about 80.

From Haneda Airport

Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho in 13 minutes; with a same-platform change to the JR Yamanote Line, about 19 minutes in all to Tokyo Station, 30 to Shibuya, 37 to Shinjuku.

Around the city

JR, Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway are three separate companies. One IC card (Suica or PASMO) rides them all, but a journey crossing Metro and Toei is charged as two fares — and the Japan Rail Pass covers neither subway.
